Glasgow City Chambers - city contrasts

Ruth Richards-Hill life at the topThe Glasgow city chambers is probably the most opulent building in the City of Glasgow available for public access at no cost.

Even if you're not into displays of such grandeur everyone that lives in or comes to the city should visit it at least once. It strikes me as a massive contrast when you are aware of the grinding poverty within the city itself and particular some of the neighbourhoods that surround the city centre.

What a lot of people don't appreciate however is that this is one of the remnants of the great shipping and trading wealth that once made this city tick. In Scotland while Edinburgh has always been seen as the centre of finance and banking, Glasgow the core of industry and trade, the beauty of Edwardian, Georgian and Victorian architecture and before remains.

This is one of the few remaining cities where you simply need to turn your head up while walking through the city to admire some of the most breathtaking architecture and sculpture.

There are free guided tours daily. If you live in the city simply hop onto the bus, as the chambers are only a few blocks away from the main Buchanan bus station. From out of town, The nearest main station is Queen Street, however by coming in at Central you will be able to enjoy the varied architecture as you walk toward George square and the Chambers that face on to the square.

A really good source of information about the chambers and getting about in Glasgo can be found on the People Make Glasgow website.
